Police in Spain said Thursday claim to have busted a gang of drug traffickers operating on the Spanish island of Ibiza and arrested thirteen people in the process. Spanish police said more than 69,000 euros, 4 kilograms of cocaine, 3,600 ecstasy pills, 5 kilograms of crystal MDMA and drug-making equipment were recovered from the detained suspects, who were arrested from different locations across the island. According to Spanish police officials, the ecstasy pills seized in the raids were similar to those linked to the death 20-year-old Briton Jodie Nieman on Ibiza in July. Police said the investigation targeted a gang suspected of smuggling drugs into Ibiza from the UK. "The detainees are members of one of the most active gangs on the island which is the main supplier of cocaine and other designer drugs around the clubs and bars," a Spanish police spokesman said. "Inquiries found that the gang, which is now dismantled, only traveled to Ibiza in summer as to meet the large demand for drugs on the island during this period," he added. The suspects, including ten from the UK, two from the Republic of Ireland and one from Poland, were arrested in a series of raids carried out on the island as part of investigations involving UK's Serious Organized Crime Agency (SOCA). A SOCA spokeswoman confirmed the arrests made on Ibiza and said: "Those arrested are suspected members of an organized crime gang responsible for a significant amount of drugs being sold on the island."
