52 people have been arrested on Ibiza in what is being described as the largest anti-drug operation against the Camorra mafia.

The police operation started on Tuesday night and has resulted in some 20 searches of property, which have revealed amounts of cocaine, liquid and pill forms of ecstasy, crystal, as well as large amounts of cash. Police say the operation was completed on Thursday morning and was several weeks in the planning.

Some 70 specialist police and Guardia Civil took part in the operation with support from some 12 vehicles and a helicopter from the National Police. Agents from Zaragoza and Valencia were called on to help.

The searches were carried out in 17 homes, 5 restaurant and bar businesses in Vila, Sant Josep and Santa Gertudis. A well known DJ based on the island is reported to be among those arrested, and a large number of pizzerias have been closed down.

Most of those arrested are Italian, and some could have links to the Camorra mafia in Naples. It appears they were in a hierarchic structure where they did not know the other members of the group.
