Locals want the Algarrobico Hotel to open for trading

Not everyone agrees with Greenpeace that the Algarrobico Hotel in Carboneras should be demolished, despite it being built illegally, and located on the edge of the Cabo de Gata Nature Park. Many local residents consider that the economic circumstances are such in Spain that nothing should be torn down, and following a squat last week by Greenpeace protestors, local residents have been demonstrating outside the hotel demanding its immediate opening. Manuel Cañas, who is from the Carboneras Tourist Business Associaiton, told El País that in a place which lives from tourism where the largest open hotel has just 30 rooms, the news that they were building a hotel with 400 rooms would bring life to the village. He says it will create jobs and wealth for the locality. ‘The hotel is practically finished and deserves a graceful exit’, he said.
