New tourist and health taxes in Cataluña

Surcharges will be added to daily hotel bills and collecting your presecription will cost 1€ each. The Catalan party CiU has managed to pass its wish for a tourist tax and also for the co-payment of health services in the region, thanks to the support of the Partido Popular. It means that from July 1 in Cataluña you will have to pay 1 € for every prescription, but there will be exceptions for the chronically ill with few resources. The tourist tax is one of the most controversial in Cataluña this year and it will be on overnight stays. It will be introduced on November 1, and the expected rates are 2.5 € a night for five star hotels and cruise liners, 1.25 € for four star hotels, and the rest of the establishments will see a 75 cents daily charge in Barcelona and a 50 cents charge in the rest of Cataluña, Also passed in the Catalan Parliament today, the CiU proposal for a ‘Law of popular consultation’, which looks for ways other than using a referendum to ‘advance democratic quality’. Under the new law if the Catalan public want to promote a matter they need the approval of the President of the Generalitat, support of a Mayor in a municipality, or the presentation of 50,000 signatures. The Socialist say the law isn’t clear and could be ‘a match in the hands of pyromaniac’.
